Frequently asked questions

Short answers about the online BDI course, Florida election rules, and reporting. For a specific enrollment, use the contact page.

What course do you offer?

Prime Traffic School offers a Florida online Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course: 11 timed chapters, four hours of instruction, chapter quizzes, a final exam, and identity checks.

How long does the course take?

Florida BDI is a four-hour course. Each chapter has a server-enforced minimum time. Leaving the tab pauses the clock. Quizzes and the final exam are in addition to chapter time.

What are the quiz and exam rules?

Chapter quizzes are five questions with an 80% passing score and unlimited practice retakes. The final exam is 40 questions and also requires 80% to pass.

How do timers, idle time, and devices work?

Time is tracked on our servers, not only in your browser. Leaving the tab, switching apps, or sitting idle pauses the clock — idle time does not count. Use one device and one active session. Opening the course on a second device can replace the first session. Do not try to skip timers or use automated tools.

Can someone else take the course for me?

No. The enrolled student must complete every portion. Identity validation may occur during the course. Completing the course for someone else, or allowing someone else to complete it for you, can invalidate credit.

How do I elect BDI, and when is the deadline?

Enrolling here is not the same as electing BDI. If you want election benefits, you generally must elect with the clerk of court in the citation county about 30 days from the citation date — or before a scheduled hearing if that comes first. Confirm the exact deadline with that clerk. We cannot elect for you or extend a missed deadline.

How many times can I elect BDI instead of a court appearance?

Under current §318.14(9), Florida Statutes, a person may not make more than eight BDI elections in a lifetime, and may not elect again if an election was made in the preceding 12 months. Commercial driver licenses, commercial learner’s permits, and some speeding citations (including 30 mph or more over the posted limit) are excluded. Confirm eligibility with the clerk of court in the citation county before you enroll.

Can I use BDI election benefits if I have a CDL?

Usually no. If you hold a commercial driver license or a commercial learner’s permit, Florida law does not give you the election benefits in §318.14(9) — including withheld adjudication, no points, and the 18% civil-penalty reduction. Ask the clerk in the citation county before you pay.

Does BDI reduce the civil penalty?

For an eligible election, current §318.14(9) requires that any civil penalty imposed by §318.18(3) be reduced by 18 percent. That reduction is not 5% or 9%. You still pay the reduced fine; the course fee is separate. Adjudication is withheld and points are not assessed when the election is properly made. Clerks may still collect other costs. Completing the course does not itself dismiss a citation.

Does finishing the course dismiss my ticket?

No. Completion does not guarantee dismissal of a citation or any particular result with a court or licensing agency. We do not pay your ticket and we do not promise a court outcome. Confirm the requirement with the clerk or agency that referred you before you enroll.

Does the citation county matter?

Yes. We report your completion to FLHSMV through DICIS and e-file the completion and citation number with the clerk of court in the county on the citation, which may not be the county where you live. The citation number and citation county are required at enrollment so that clerk can receive the filing.

Who reports my completion, and how fast?

After you pass the final exam, Prime Traffic School reports your completion to FLHSMV through DICIS within 5 days. After FLHSMV issues the official DHSMV certificate number, we e-file the completion and citation number with the clerk of court in the county that issued the citation through the Florida Courts E-Filing Portal, within 3 days of that certificate number. You still need to verify that both records posted before your deadline.

When do I get a certificate PDF and a DHSMV certificate number?

Passing the final exam unlocks a printable course completion PDF in your account. The official DHSMV certificate number is added after electronic reporting — not before. Until then, the certificate may show that filing is still pending. The electronic FLHSMV record is authoritative for licensing.

Do I still need to check with the clerk and FLHSMV?

Yes. Keep your certificate and confirm with the clerk and the court that your election was recorded. Always verify with the citation-county clerk and with FLHSMV that your election (if required) and completion posted before your deadlines. Do not wait for us to confirm that a court has closed the ticket. If something is missing, contact us and the clerk promptly.

What if my enrollment information is wrong?

Incorrect name, name suffix, date of birth, Florida driver license number, mailing address, phone, reason for attending, citation number, or citation county can delay or block reporting. Fix mistakes with us as soon as you notice them. We may need the corrected details before FLHSMV or the clerk can accept the filing.

Will this lower my insurance?

Not necessarily. Some insurers may offer a discount after a BDI course, but that is carrier-dependent and is not guaranteed. Ask your insurance company. We do not promise a premium reduction.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are generally considered only if you have not finished the course and we have not electronically reported completion. There is no refund after completion is reported, and none because you missed an election deadline or were not eligible. See the Refund Policy for how to ask.
